Learn the Art of Thai Massage
with Melissa Carey
Having roots in Ayurvedic medicine, Yoga, Buddhism and Chinese Acupressure, Thai Massage is a unique blend of bodywork. Dating back around 2,500 years little is written about this intriguing modality, except for a few inscribed stone tablets kept in the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok. The Father Doctor Shivago, a friend and contemporary to the Buddha, created it, and spread it to Thailand with the expansion of Buddhism. Until recently people in Thailand have had to go to temples to experience this healing art form. With the rise in tourism, and the fact that women weren’t allowed in the temples, people began practicing in their homes and Thai Massage is now working its way into western culture.
Creating balance and health in the body is the goal. Working with gentle rocking, rhythmic compression, acupressure and yogic stretches, we open the muscles and joints. Working on a mat on the floor the practitioner moves the client in a fluid dance, using her whole body. It is done fully clothed and using little if any oil. Thai Massage is a meditation for client and practitioner, benefiting them both by balancing the nervous system, creating flexibility and strength.
This course will cover a basic 2 hour Thai Massage, seated, supine, prone, and side lying. We will start our day by opening our bodies with yoga and Thai Yogi Techniques, to help instill the practice of taking care of yourself while you are practicing.
We will meet 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
Sundays from July 11 to August 15
(Taking a break Aug 1st)
$300 for the whole course
